Ian Butterfield - the legend
Sad news today, I heard of the passing earlier this week of Ian Butterfield, surely a name that needs no introduction in the world of Pleione growing, or indeed orchid growing as a whole.
Ian is the man, who more than 40 years ago ignited the spark which became the fire that drives me to this day in growing Pleione. A man always happy to chat and impart knowledge and wisdom to those willing to learn from him and it was his passion that fuelled my love of this plant.
A man, generous with his time and knowledge, especially for those just entering the beautiful world of Pleione will be sadly missed, he has achieved what very few scholars and artists have achieved and that is to be recognised by a single name - Ian. Speak with anyone in the Pleione community and say 'Ian' and it needs no more explanation.
I have his books, his catalogues and photos of us together in his greenhouses, the plant I will always remember him by is Pleione praecox 'Reichenbachiana' as I recall trying to persuade him to let me have on having seen it in flower in his greenhouse many years ago.
They say you die twice, once when you pass away and again when your name is said for the last time....that will be a very long time in Ian's case.
The thoughts of me, Sarah and our family are with Ians nearest and dearest at this time.
May it be eternally Mid-April for Ian (and no bees around)
